Although the sport of volleyball is the second most popular sport in the world, in North America most young athletes can only participate in the sport at their local school and at elite volleyball clubs. School programs generally include a short season that allows for plenty of team play but little opportunity for skill development. Volleyball clubs are generally expensive undertakings with paid coaches and a mandate of developing those few athletes that are selected following a club's selection process.
In brief, there is no national infrastructure for the development of grass-roots volleyball. In fact, even mini-volleyball is generally delivered by volleyball clubs that are designed for the development of the elite few. Therefore, those that rise to the top early can go on into the "club system" while others are left behind with nowehere to play. This system is complicated by the fact that clubs come and go along with their volunteer administrators or when key coaches retire.
Simply put, without paid staff to ensure the continued growth of the organization, most clubs are inactive within a five-year period; which is the amount of time it takes one's child to go through the club system. For the majority of volleyball club coaches and volunteers the desire to start their programs comes with an interest in starting a program for their children.
The goal of the NMVA is to develop sustainable volleyball programs for all. This can only be achieved by generating sufficient revenue to hire full-time administrators to support our member organizations. Doing so will allow members to focus on the final product – the quality of the coaching, facilities and the marketing & promotion of the programs.
The initial focus of the NMVA is to recruit individuals with a love of sport that are interested in developing a Home-based Amateur Sport Business. Although the NMVA is a non-profit, this does not prevent the organization from offering ambitious entrepreneurs with a love of the game the opportunity of establishing a sport organization in his/her community as a part-time enterprise.
