Background:
Volleyball is a sport for kids and adults of varying skill levels. About 2.5 million people play volleyball recreationally or competitively in Canada.
Volleyball is played by two teams of six, on a "court" with a high net in the middle. The goal is to hit a ball over the net, so your opponents cannot hit it back, to earn a point. Twenty-five points wins a game (set), and matches are typically best-of-three or best-of-five. The game is played using three key skills: "Bump", "Set" and "Spike".
Beach volleyball is played with between two and six players per side on a sand court. Fewer the players requires a higher skill level and greater teamwork. 10 million people play in competitive beach volleyball leagues each summer across North America.
About the sport:
All of our indoor volleyball leagues are co-ed 6's (2 women minimum) and are played in school gyms throughout the city. Bump it, set it, hit it....just DO IT!
Equipment:
There is not much equipment required for volleyball: your basic athletic shorts, shirt, and a non-marking court shoe with good support and spring.
Who can play?
Adults age 18 and older may join our co-ed leagues. We welcome full teams, small groups (5 or more players but not a full team), friends (2-4 players) and individual registrations. Small group, friends and individual registrations are combined with other similar registrants to form a team that remains together for the duration of the season.
The GMVA Adult Co-ed League is run quarterly with fall, winter, spring and summer sessions.
All teams are open to adults of all skill level; our sport league is available to the most recreational of players and the more competitive athlete. Both teams and individuals are welcome. If you are interested in a team sport but don't have a team or partner to join with, just sign up on your own and we'll get you playing!
By joining you can expect to have a lot of fun, get a great workout and meet new friends. The GMVA is about bringing people together to play sports and have fun. Note that...
- league is co-ed.
- league is self-officiated.
- league features post-game socials.
- league features divisions defined by skill level as the number of teams permits it.
- The GMVA encourages all players to play with a 'fun first, winning second' attitude. Our leagues are about getting out and having a good time with old and new friends alike! The GMVA believes that encouraging good sporting behaviour is why players join and remain in sport leagues. Playing with 'GMVA spirit' provides a non-threatening, fun environment for all levels of players. Good sporting behaviour: behavioral tendencies of a person who can take a loss or defeat without complaint, and victory without gloating, and who treats all opponents with fairness, courtesy and respect. This is the attitude we encourage all players to display on and off the court!
Spirit of the Game - We emphasize fun first, winning second.
Post Game Socials - Each weeknight will feature several sponsor bars. Join the party!
Defaults - Respect your peers - never default a game. The GMVA can help teams to find subs. Teams must submit a new deposit each season (previous deposits will be returned or destroyed), in some cases we can transfer them upon request.
Schedules are posted on the website www.gmva.ca no later than 24 hours prior to the first scheduled game.
Rules are available online under each sport.
Game Times & Locations: Start times are between 6:00pm-10:00pm on Sunday evenings at Mitchell Woods PS, 670 Willow Rd.
Skill Levels: The GMVA reserves the right to move teams to a division better suited to their level of play. However, only one division of play is planned for the upcoming 2010-2011 season.
Default Fee – As with similar policies in other leagues, the GMVA will implement a program to help eliminate defaults. Each time a team defaults they are charged $25. If you pay by credit card, the card is automatically charged. If you pay league fees by cash or cheque you must supply $25 cash or cheque. A team who loses their cash or cheque deposit must supply another $25 before playing again. At the end of the season, all teams who were defaulted against go into a draw for a portion of the fees collected.
